Artichoke

Artichokes are actually unopened flower buds; if left to bloom, they turn into large, purple, thistle-like flowers. They’ve been eaten since ancient times and were once considered such a luxury in Europe that, in the 16th century, only the wealthy were allowed to eat them in some regions.
